BUSHNELL 202205 Sport¨ 850 Vertical Laser RangefinderLightning fast, lightweight, and small enough to fit in a shirt pocket, the Bushnell Sport 850 laser rangefinder packs a monster dose of accuracy into a sleek, easy-to-handle body. The Sport 850 is as easy to use as a laser rangefinder to be: with the tap of a single button, you'll know the exact distance to your target from 5 to 850 yards. The rangefinder also offers bright, crystal-clear optics, so you can see the target even in low light. With hairsplitting precision and long-term dependability, the Sport 850 is a favorite of bow and rifle hunters alike.
How Bushnell's Laser Rangefinders Work
Bushnell's laser rangefinders use an invisible, eye-safe Class 1 laser beam (as classified by the FDA), which is "bounced" off distant objects at the press of a button. In the process, the rangefinder uses a high-speed digital clock to measure the time it took for the laser beam to reach the target and return, and then calculates the distance within plus-or-minus 1 yard. The entire process is so fast that less than a second elapses between the time you press the button and the time the exact range appears. The information appears on the unit's through-the-lens LCD display.
Because rangefinders bounce laser beams off targets in order to take measurements, their range is partially determined by the target's reflectivity. So distances to reflective or "hard" targets like rock cliffs and semis can be measured from farther away than those to soft-surface targets such as deer. Ranges for moderately reflective targets, like trees, fall somewhere in the middle. Most experienced hunters will use their rangefinder to estimate ranges to near and distant landmarks before they actually encounter a game animal. By pre-measuring ranges to spots where trophies are likely to appear, they can concentrate on making an accurate shot when the moment of truth arrives.

Good for hunting only
I bought this Bushnell with the purpose of mainly golf but also hunting. For hunting it works great but i would not suggest buying this if golf is your main purpose. It does not lock onto the flag stick very good past 200 yards and doesnt have the feature of continous reading. For example i have a Callaway Nikon that will read different spots for up to 5 seconds so you can have an unsteady hand and still hit the flagstick. With the Bushnell this feature isnt available

Understanding that this item works by reflecting an "eye safe" laser beam off a target and then timing the reflected beam back to the rangefinder source helps clarify why certain targets work better than others. One reviewer noted that it doesn't read very well off Black Angus cattle. This because they're dark, furry and don't reflect much of a beam. Noted elsewhere in reviews that it doesn't work well for reading the "pin" in golf. That's a small curved target.
I use a range finder for bench-rest shooting. The targets are flat, stationary, reflective. Because I'm at a bench, I can support the rangefinder, hold it steady on a small 12" X 12" target -- out to 500 yds if required. The other sighting option is to find a large, reflective surface near the...
